The design of the Yalalag Cross, found only in the village of Yalalag, Oaxaca, goes back to Salamanca, Spain, and was brought to Mexico by Dominican friars during the colonial period. Indigenous Oaxaca silversmiths incorporated local symbols and styles since the 16th century. Common motifs include the winged heart, pomegranates, and birds, or roosters. This amazing vintage cross is solid sterling silver set with a blue glass stone and features birds and hearts. Hang it from a silver or beaded chain. Since the piece is older, there is some wear. The silver balls have small dings that do not detract from the piece’s beauty. Lovely patina. Sand cast. Measures 4-1/2″ long x 2″ wide.
