Knock-Out Vintage Oaxaca Yalalag Cross, Sterling Silver + Turquoise Pendant Necklace

This is a stunning, knock-out piece of sand cast statement jewelry. The design of the Yalalag Cross, found only in the village of Yalalag, Oaxaca, goes back to Salamanca, Spain, and was brought to Mexico by Dominican friars during the colonial period. Indigenous Oaxaca silversmiths incorporated local symbols and styles since the 16th century. Common motifs include the winged heart, pomegranates, and birds, or roosters. This amazing vintage cross is solid sterling silver set with turquoise and has three turquoise beads dangling from its three arms. At the tip of each arm is a miniature corn goddess. Lovely patina. Mexico’s sacred corn goddess Chicomecoatl symbolizes fertility, sustenance and agriculture. Maize or corn was the cornerstone of Mesoamerican civilization, so she is deeply revered. Hang it from a silver or beaded chain. The piece, despite being older, is in near pristine condition with normal oxidization. I have not cleaned it. Measures 3-1/2″ long x 1-1/2″ wide.
