Hand-hooked from 100% recycled clothing. This one-of-a-kind rug is made by one of the talented Maya artisans of Multicolores, which is based in Panajachel on Lake Atitlan, about two hours from Antigua, Guatemala. I purchased this rug when we visited there in February 2025. The rug features abstract symbols of the Maya iconography in muted colors of gray, blue, purple, and red. You can read more about this group of artisans in the book Rug Money. Multicolores is a Guatemalan registered non-profit organization that supports Maya women in their process of self-discovery and artistic development. Multicolores’ programs are transformative- creating long-term, sustainable impacts that strengthen entire communities. They use art as a tool for exploration and expression, igniting the artists’ many talents and abilities, and empowering them to become powerful agents of change. Many are young girls who are encouraged to continue their education, learn English, and pursue university.
