Memoir and Fiction: Creative Writing Workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico: Lives in Motion

You write or have always wanted to write.  You may be experienced and published, a raw beginner or somewhere in-between.  Wherever you are, this 5-day creative writing workshop will help you become a better writer of fiction or memoir — or both!  Writing memoir and fiction can be an exploration of self that becomes integrated into the creative work.  With published authors and university professors Robin Greene and Michael Colonnese you will explore the craft by examining your own life and experiences that can be integrated into and reflected in your writing.  Your voice will gain strength and momentum through this creative process.

Arrive Friday, July 12, depart Thursday, July 18—six nights, five days.

Participants may sign up in advance for either memoir or fiction tracks or take part in both. Each day offers a mixed-genre technique seminar, followed by a breakout genre-specific workshop session. Writers—at all levels of accomplishment (including beginners) —are welcome and will benefit from the supportive, stimulating and enriching format. Topics include:

  • Setting and Context—how and where our important stories take place
  • Genre Conventions and Publishing—effectively presenting your work to readers
  • Effective Plotting—the events that move our stories forward
  • Point of View, Voice, and Narrative Reliability—understanding the teller of the tale
  • Negotiating Grammar and Tense—the nuts-and-bolts of writing and effective editing

With experienced authors and university professors Michael Colonnese and Robin Greene as your writing instructors, and Norma Hawthorne as your cultural guide, you’ll have the opportunity to write or polish your fiction or personal memoir.

We will be based in the Zapotec weaving village of Teotitlan del Valle about thirty minutes from Oaxaca city, where we are surrounded by 9,000 foot peaks, shaded by ripening pomegranates, and scented by blossoming bougainvillea—a setting that inspires and renews creativity.  Here in this traditional Zapotec village, life and a naturally beautiful setting unfolds to stimulate your senses and creative energy.  Daily workshop sessions are tailored to each participant’s skill-level and needs.

We include a one-on-one conference with Michael or Robin to discuss your work and gain meaningful feedback that will serve your development as a writer well beyond the workshop. Participants may also choose to pay a fee and receive a manuscript review.

Although we cannot promise that you’ll win a literary prize—as one of Robin’s  retreat participants did in 2011 after writing an award-winning poem at a similar retreat, or be published in a prestigious literary journal as another participant did in 2012—we can promise that you will explore and develop yourself as a writer.

You’ll have plenty of free time to write during the workshop.  You can also choose to take part in optional activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and visiting village weaving and artists’ studios. You are welcome to venture out and explore the village and its environs on your own. Personal safety is not a concern here.

Meet Your Instructors: 

Robin Greene is the McLean Endowed Professor of English and Writing, and Director of the Writing Center at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is also co-founder and editor of Longleaf Press and is widely published. Greene is recipient of a NC Arts Council/NEA Fellowship, a university teaching award, and a visiting professorship in Romania. Greene has led community and conference workshops, has served as a writing consultant, and has taught creative writing for over two decades. Her books include Real Birth: Women Share Their Stories (nonfiction), Memories of Light and Lateral Drift (collections of poetry), and Augustus: Narrative of a Slave Woman (novel). Greene holds an M.A. in English from SUNY-Binghamton and an M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Michael Colonnese is a published novelist and poet, and the Director of the Creative Writing Program at Methodist University. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Binghamton University. His award-winning mystery novel, Sex and Death, I Suppose, won the Dark Oak Novel Award and was published in 2010 by Oak Tree Press. A poetry collection, Temporary Agency, won the prestigious Ledge Poetry Award and was published in 2009 by Ledge Press. Over his literary career, he has published widely in short fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction and is the winner of numerous literary awards in all three genres. He was also a NEH grant recipient, and he worked for years as a documentary filmmaker whose work in that medium has aired on public television.

Norma Hawthorne has produced arts and educational programs in Oaxaca, Mexico, through Oaxaca Cultural Navigator LLC since 2006. She offers textile, arts  photography workshops that are attended by participants from around the world. During her career in higher education, Norma has organized national award-winning continuing education programs for Indiana University, University of Virginia, and George Washington University, and raised more than $23 million for The University of North Carolina School of Nursing. She holds the B.A. from California State University at Northridge and the M.S. from the University of Notre Dame.

To keep this program affordable, we have selected clean and basic accommodations at family-operated bed and breakfast inns. Local meals are prepared by excellent cooks from organic ingredients made from scratch. Vegetarian options are available.

Third Annual Oaxaca Women’s Creative Writing + Yoga Retreat: Lifting Your Creative Voice

Our Third Annual Oaxaca Women’s Creative Writing and Yoga Retreat: Lifting Your Creative Voice is a workshop based in the Zapotec weaving village of Teotitlan del Valle.  Imagine a setting so beautiful that it inspires all the best within you to write and create. Here, amid the bougainvillea blossoms and in the shade of ripening pomegranates, with the backdrop of 9,000 foot mountain peaks, you will enjoy a rich and rewarding experience. Our all-inclusive workshop is perfect for renewal and self-reflection. With Professor Robin Greene, MFA, guiding and coaching you in a supportive small group atmosphere, you’ll be encouraged to find your own creative center and to surprise yourself with the power of your words. You’ll have the opportunity to work with memoir, journaling, poetry, and mixed genre writing in an intimate workshop environment.

Through daily yoga sessions that are tailored to each participant’s physical level and needs, you will flex your body to stretch your imagination.  Our talented and supportive yoga teacher is Beth Miller from Boulder, Colorado, who is back with us for Year Three, too.  Beth employs movement, chanting and “vocal yoga,” using the breath to find voice and creative center.

Across half a continent I’ve traveled to Oaxaca—

mountains, pomegranates, sacred hearts,

searching for something, but I’m not sure

what.  Is it love, sorrow, or pain that fills my heart?

Morning breeze, cool—midday sun, hard.

Don’t try to prepare for the desert mountain;

the mountain will prepare for you or for something

unexpected. And what expectations

but the ragged unfolding of our hours,

souls singing, rising upward?

So let us gaze into that blue sky, let mountain

tears be indigo, pericon—jammed against

that mountain’s face, we face the sun,

balance between here, there, and sigh.

*The Exquisite Corpse is a surrealist tradition, as Robin Greene explains, in which a piece of art is made collaboratively.  The Corpse Pose in yoga is the Shivasana ending pose.  During our workshop, each person contributed a line or two each day.  Robin pulled all our voices together to hear the collaborative voice as one.  The result was the poem above, Ragged and Unfolding.

Beth Miller is our yoga instructor who combines yogic practice and philosophy with meditation, creativity and improvisation. She specializes in Vinyasa-Hatha yogic traditions and employs sonorous yoga practices as an approach to help women of all ages to give voice to their lives. She has a background in Holistic-Health Counseling, working primarily with teen girls and young women to inspire healthy lifestyle habits. In addition, Beth is a vocal artist, performer and teacher of Western classical and sacred music. She holds a B.A. in music from Westminster Choir College, is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor, and completed the chef training program from the Institute for Culinary Education.

Novelist, Poet and English Professor Robin Greene Leads Creative Writing Workshop

Robin Greene, novelist, poet, English professor, yoga practitioner, parent and wife, is a native New Yorker who is a “Southerner by choice.”  She came to Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1989, and joined the faculty at Methodist University where she is now Professor of English and Writing, the Director of the Writing Center, and Literary Editor of Longleaf Press.

Greene recently completed “Augustus: Narrative of a Slave Woman,” a  novel based on the oral history of a former Fayetteville slave compiled by the Works Progress Administration.  It expertly weaves together Greene’s imagination of what happened with the sparse written legacy recorded in the Library of Congress archives.  The book took Greene ten years to write and she included herself in the novel.  “I exist as Professor Greene, an inquisitive English professor who finds her way into an old mystery,” she says.  In a twist of events, the protagonist Sarah Louise Augustus, the former slave, emerges from the narrative to become the Professor’s teacher.

“The novel is a commentary on black feminism, race-specific reactions to historical inquiry, on sexuality and rape and the quest for identity,” explains Greene.  In 2010, she was invited to teach American Slave Narrative as Literature at a university in Romania.  And, then Norma Hawthorne selected her from an applicant pool of over 100 published writers and writing instructors to lead a creative writing retreat in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Women’s Creative Writing and Yoga Retreat (March 2-9, 2012) is a natural extension of Robin Greene’s reflective nature.  In Oaxaca, Mexico each spring she offers coaching, inspiration and guidance to other women writers.  “We come together as a supportive community and develop a spirit of strength that is often transformative,” Greene says.   “The life of any artist is a complicated one, and emergent writers need to learn not only how to write but also how to make their lives work.”

Greene is passionate about this:  “Many writers need help to integrate the many demands on their time.  It is hard to write, edit, publish, make a living, and be an effective parent.”  Her own life experience tells her so.

When Robin Greene earned the Master’s degree in English from State University of New York at Binghamton and the Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, she was married and then became a mother. She knows what it takes to balance work, home, family, commitments, and creative endeavors.  She goes on to say that, “Today, writers also need to be able to handle Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn—plus all sorts of electronic information systems.

Her nonfiction book, Real Birth, took Greene eight years to complete. Memories of Light and Lateral Drift, two volumes of poetry, were published after years of getting up at five o’clock in the morning before her family awakened, then writing for two or three hours in solitude before turning to the responsibilities of getting children fed and ready for school.

Greene knows how difficult it is to try to negotiate the many incongruent parts of a writer’s life. Her advice:  “In order to write successfully, you must first schedule writing time. Writers must selfishly honor that time regardless of all other commitments.”  She also believes that grammar is at the core of knowing one’s craft.  She includes optional grammar mini-sessions in the writing retreat.

Writers must also have a commitment to lifelong learning.  “A writer’s education is never complete,” she says.  “Writers need feedback, need to understand the business side of writing, and show always focus on improving technique. This happens over a lifetime.  Writers are marathon runners, not twenty-yard sprinters. It is why attending a professional development program like our women’s writing retreat can be so important and essential, no matter what your level or personal accomplishment.”

And for her next project? Greene is at work on a collection of open letters of advice and inspiration from a range of poets, from the “old masters” to the “younger, less established who are looking to find their way.” The book will offer guidance for emergent poets that is now offered at some of the best writing programs. Creative Writing: Wherever you go is where you are.

Creative writing is creative ignorance, according to Robin Greene, MFA.  Robin is the author of several books:  poetry, non-fiction and memoir, and fiction.  As she gathered us around the table for the women’s creative writing and yoga retreat, she talked about what it means to write for her.  Then, she opened it up for our discussion.

“You have to know a lot in order to write,” she says.  “Then, you have to forget what you know to write.”  This seems like a contradiction, but it is important not to let the discipline of writing — the thinking part — get in the way of the self-expression.

During our week together, eleven women talked, wrote, meditated, did yoga and vocal stretching, and expanded our voice.  Robin guided us in the writing life.  Beth Miller, our superb yoga instructor from Boulder, Colorado, gave us the inspirational tools to relax, focus, and gain introspection.

For twenty minutes before each writing session, we would meditate using Zen practices (count your breaths to the number ten) or Vipassana insight meditation.  This approach was more organic, physical.  We were present with our bodies, our thoughts were like clouds passing and sound became part of the background music. The practice cleared our minds and allowed us to open up to be more mindful.

“When you are more mindful, you are more creative and authentic,” says Robin.  “You have a place to return to in order to attend to the writing.”

During the early sessions, we took turns reading from our favorite authors and poets — passages that were meaningful to us.  To listen to the words, the lyrical stringing of thoughts, ideas, passions, reminded us of the beauty of language and affirmed our own capability to express it.  We read Rilke, Sylvia Plath, Bill Buford, Mary Oliver, Tonantzin, Helen Hunt Jackson, and William Carlos Williams.

Then we heard each others’ voices:  heart carried on white wings, my mother in the hospital room, the intermission of fruit, pomegranates, an invitation to the unknown, women who weep at funerals, let yourself be revised, dear Ben, my life is fragments, a dawn embroidered with birdsong, dark coffee beans and indigo threads, my job here is to lift the latch.

We soaked up the culture of the village and the immersion was a place for us to renew our commitment to ourselves and each other to write.

Our next Women’s Creative Writing and Yoga Retreat is scheduled for December 28, 2011 to January 2, 2012 with an optional two-day master class from January 2-4.
